Having hard drives shredded – How does that work?

Have your hard drives shredded in five simple steps. We ensure a secure, audit-proof and transparent process. From on-site pickup to the destruction statement: Holland Recycling gives you complete peace of mind.

In the first step, we collect your hard drives and data carriers from your location.

In the second step, your data is continuously secured at our site in Boxtel, with 24-hour camera surveillance and alarm security.

In the third step, we register all your hard drives based on serial number, brand name and capacity.

The fourth step is the actual shredding: your hard drives are shredded to a particle size in accordance with DIN66399 3:H5.

In the fifth and final step, you receive a GDPR-compliant destruction statement, supplemented with the serial numbers of all destroyed data carriers.

Having hard drives shredded securely

A hard drive is a data carrier on which you store digital information. Confidential data such as contact details, Word files and Excel sheets remains stored on it, even if you format the hard drive. Have your old hard drives collected and shredded by Holland Recycling. Thanks to our industrial hard disk shredder, your company data can no longer be read.

Holland Recycling’s method is 100% audit-proof thanks to our clear documentation and small shred size. We still see many businesses destroying hard drives themselves, for example by hitting them with a hammer or drilling a hole in them. The problem is that the data is still present on the internal disk. Our hard disk shredder shreds your hard drives into such small particles that recovering information becomes impossible.

Hard disk shredder in accordance with DIN66399

To demonstrate how securely a hard drive is destroyed with a hard disk shredder, Holland Recycling uses DIN standard 66399. We shred hard drives to a particle size in accordance with protection class 3, security level H5. This is the highest possible protection class for confidential and secret data. Similar security levels apply to other data carriers: tapes (T3), optical media such as CDs (O3) and electronic media such as USB sticks (E2).

Besides security, cost also plays a role. The cost of shredding hard drives depends on the number of data carriers you want shredded. For larger batches, we offer more attractive rates. Sustainable processing of shredded materials

Besides security, sustainability naturally also plays a major role when disposing of your old hard drives. Hard drives are, after all, largely made of aluminium and PCB, both of which are highly recyclable.

Unfortunately, recycling is not possible when destroying tapes and floppy disks. After these types of storage media are physically destroyed, the output is incinerated to generate energy in waste incineration plants. This way, this processing still has a useful application! Even more sustainable than shredding is wiping hard drives.

Audit-proof documentation

Should you ever face an inspection due to GDPR or an audit for one of your certifications, you’ll want audit-proof documents to demonstrate that you had your data carriers destroyed securely. Our documents are highly complete and suitable for any audit or inspection. Registration takes place at serial number level and also includes the brand name, capacity and type of each destroyed data carrier.

After shredding, you receive a destruction statement that serves as conclusive proof for your internal records and external audits. This allows you to demonstrate during any inspection that your organisation had its data carriers processed in accordance with applicable GDPR legislation and information security standards, by a fully certified and professional company.

Software-based wiping with certified Certus Software. Data is overwritten at least three times, and the drive retains its residual value.

Phone destruction

Certified destruction of smartphones and tablets. Including complete data removal and reporting.

Hard drive destruction

Certified destruction of HDD and SSD drives, via shredding or software-based wiping. Including an official destruction certificate for your records.

Tape destruction

Certified destruction of data tapes and other backup media. Always in accordance with DIN66399 with a destruction statement.

Why have hard drives shredded?

It is important that data carriers from devices at the end of their lifespan are disposed of securely, so that businesses’ sensitive data remains protected. Holland Recycling guarantees that the hard disk shredder shreds all your hard drives into particles so small that recovering information becomes impossible.

What does DIN standard 66399 involve?

This is a German industrial safety standard for destroying data carriers. This standard describes the various types of storage methods and the corresponding destruction requirements. A distinction is made between protection classes (1 through 3), security levels (1 through 7) and material classifications (6 types).

Does Holland Recycling have a mobile hard disk shredder?

No, we do not (currently) have a mobile hard disk shredder. At our business location in Boxtel, we have an HSM StoreEx HDS 230 shredder. Holland Recycling’s method is 100% audit-proof thanks to our clear documentation and small shred size.

Is shredding a hard drive safe?

Yes, at Holland Recycling this is done fully GDPR-proof. Hard drives are shredded down to such a small size that they meet protection class 3 and security level H5. We work according to the highest possible protection class: very high protection of confidential and secret data.
