Having hard drives wiped: How does that work?

Have your hard drives wiped in five simple steps. We ensure a secure, GDPR-proof and transparent process. Your data is permanently wiped using certified software, and you receive a detailed wipe report as proof.

In the first step, we collect your hard drives and data carriers from your location.

In the second step, we register all your hard drives based on serial number, brand name and capacity.

In the third step, your data is continuously secured at our site in Boxtel, with 24-hour camera surveillance and alarm security.

The fourth step is the actual wiping: your hard drives are overwritten multiple times using certified Certus Software.

In the fifth and final step, you receive a detailed, GDPR-proof wipe report per hard drive, including the serial number and wiping method used.

Corporate social responsibility

A sustainable approach is central to Holland Recycling. Not only the processing itself is important here, but especially the way we do it. Because the refurbishment process for IT hardware lends itself particularly well to employing people with a distance to the labour market, we have a wonderfully mixed team. As a member of CSR initiative AANtWERK, we work daily towards inclusive business practices. Want to know more about our social approach? Check out our page about sustainability and CSR.

Wiping business hard drives securely and completely

The amount of data collected by businesses has increased enormously in recent years. Paper archives have been replaced by small hard drives or SSDs. With the introduction of GDPR, fully and correctly destroying this data has become even more important. Let Holland Recycling handle this for you and avoid heavy fines.

You may still have old hard drives (HDD or SSD) you no longer use, for example from brands like Toshiba, Western Digital or Seagate. We can certifiably wipe these hard drives, as well as those of other brands, for you. The advantage of wiping hard drives compared to shredding is that the drive retains its usability. This makes wiping the most sustainable option.

Wiping hard drives with certified software

Holland Recycling is a certified Business Partner of Certus Software, the only EU-based provider for data erasure. The software is certified in accordance with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and Common Criteria EAL3+. This is currently the highest security standard granted in the EU for data destruction.

Holland Recycling uses the ‘standard overwrite’ protocol by default, whereby data is overwritten at least three times. Other wiping techniques can be applied in consultation. After wiping, you receive a detailed Certified Data Erasure Report per hard drive with all relevant information: the serial number, brand name, capacity and overwrite method used. This report serves as your audit-proof evidence in accordance with Article 17 of the GDPR.

What our clients say:

When to wipe a hard drive?

In terms of security, there is no difference between wiping and shredding: in both cases, your data is 100% destroyed. You can demonstrate this in both cases with the documentation you receive from us. When we wipe a hard drive, we may still be able to sell the hard disk, so wiping is only interesting for hard drives with sufficient capacity.

If the hard disks are too old, wiping is not advisable. Emptying a hard drive takes a very long time, as it is overwritten completely multiple times. In that case, we recommend having the hard drives destroyed. Get in touch and we’re happy to advise you on the best option for your situation.

Optional report after wiping hard drives

When wiping hard drives, Certus Software generates detailed reports. You can choose between a Hardware Audit Report with all parameters of your device, or a Certified Data Erasure Report per individual device or for multiple devices at once. All reports comply with Article 17 of the GDPR and are available in PDF, CSV, XML and XLS format.

These reports serve as your conclusive proof of certified data erasure. This allows you to demonstrate during any audit or inspection that your organisation had its data carriers processed in accordance with applicable GDPR legislation by a fully certified company.

Holland Recycling works with certified software from Certus Erasure. This software is certified and accredited by, among others, NATO, Common Criteria, the National Cyber Security Centre and ADISA.

Data carriers still suitable for reuse can be more financially attractive to wipe. Moreover, this way you contribute to the circular economy.
